Stump grinding in San Antonio removes the stump and surface roots below grade so your yard is usable again — quoted as its own line item whether the stump came from our removal or someone else's.
A leftover stump is more than an eyesore. It sprouts suckers, feeds termites and other pests close to the house, trips mowers, and blocks replanting. Cowboy Tree Care And Services grinds stumps of any size across San Antonio — from a single backyard stump to a full lot after clearing — and leaves the area clean and ready to reuse.
Because stump work is its own job with its own equipment, we quote it as a separate line item. Whether the stump came from our removal or someone else's, we'll grind it flush, take it deep enough to replant, or clear the roots — you choose, and you see the price up front.

Signs You Need Stump Grinding & Removal
Sprouting suckers
New shoots keep coming back from a cut stump or its roots.
Pest magnet
Rotting stumps draw termites, ants, and beetles toward the house.
Mowing and safety hazard
A hidden stump that catches the mower or trips foot traffic.
Blocked replanting
You want to plant, pave, or build where the stump sits.
What Our Stump Grinding & Removal Includes
Every stump grinding & removal job in San Antonio is scoped in writing, so you know exactly what you're getting. Here's what's covered:
Utility & irrigation check
We locate lines, cables, and sprinkler heads before the grinder touches the ground.
Below-grade grinding
Stump and major surface roots ground 4–10 inches down, or deeper for replanting.
Surface-root chasing
Visible roots running across the lawn ground out where you need them gone.
Backfill or haul-off
Grindings raked back to fill the hole, or excess hauled if you're planting grass or a tree.
Site cleanup
Area left smooth and ready — no ruts, no leftover debris.
Grinding vs. Full Stump Removal
Most homeowners want stump grinding: a machine chips the stump and major surface roots down 4–10 inches (or deeper for replanting) below grade, leaving a pile of grindings that backfill the hole. It's faster, cheaper, and far less disruptive to your yard than full excavation.
Full stump removal — pulling the entire root plate out — is sometimes needed for new construction, pool work, or where roots must be completely gone. It leaves a large hole and costs more. We'll tell you honestly which one your project actually needs.
What We Do With the Grindings
By default we backfill the hole with the grindings and rake the area smooth; they settle over a few weeks. If you're planting grass or a new tree, we can haul the excess chips, remove more of the root mass, and top with soil so you're ready to plant. Just tell us the end goal and we'll grind to match it.

What Affects the Price
We don't post one-size-fits-all prices, because no two trees are the same. Every job is quoted in writing after we see it. These are the factors that move the number up or down:
- Stump diameter (measured at grade) and number of stumps
- Grinding depth — flush vs. deep for replanting
- Root spread and surface roots to be chased
- Access for the grinder (gate width, slope)
- Whether grindings stay as backfill or are hauled off
