Cowboy Tree Care And Services grinds stumps in Boerne, TX and across Kendall County — single yard stumps, rows of cedar stumps left from clearing, and big live-oak stumps — taking them below grade, chasing the surface roots, and cleaning up so the spot is ready for grass, beds, or a path.
Stumps on Boerne properties come with a few local twists. The soil is often thin over limestone, many stumps are live oak or cedar left over from clearing, and plenty of lots sit on slopes or behind gates a full-size machine can't fit through. A crew used to deep city soil can show up with the wrong equipment and leave a stump half-ground on a rock shelf.
We grind stumps throughout Boerne — from the older streets near Main Street and the Cibolo Nature Center to homesites out toward Boerne City Lake and the Kendall County acreage beyond — and we quote every job in writing after we've seen the stumps, the ground, and the access.

Stump assessment
Diameter, species, root flare, rock depth, and access checked before we quote.
Below-grade grinding
Stumps ground below grade as deep as the ground allows — typically 4 to 10 inches.
Surface-root grinding
Major roots near the stump ground out so mowers and feet don't catch them.
Utility locate
A Texas 811 locate requested when a stump sits near buried lines.
Grindings handled your way
Raked back as fill, spread as mulch, or hauled with topsoil backfill.
Sprout notes
A heads-up on any species likely to resprout and how to handle it.
Grinding Stumps on Limestone
Much of Boerne sits on the limestone of the Edwards Plateau, and in many yards the rock is only a few inches under the topsoil. A stump grinder cuts wood, not rock, so where the roots sit on a ledge, the grind stops at the rock. On those lots the realistic depth may be less than the usual 4 to 10 inches below grade.
We probe around the root flare before quoting and tell you plainly what depth to expect. If you're planning sod, a few inches of fresh soil over the rock is usually enough. If you want to replant a tree in the same spot, we'll talk through whether that location makes sense or whether a nearby spot with deeper soil is the better choice.
Live Oak Stumps and Oak Wilt
Boerne sits in the middle of Central Texas oak-wilt country, and many of the stumps we grind here are live oaks that died from it or were removed to contain it. Grinding the stump is fine and often useful, but it doesn't stop the disease from moving through connected roots to neighboring oaks. If oak wilt is why the tree came down, containment — usually trenching between infected and healthy trees — is a separate step worth discussing.
Live-oak stumps also tend to push root sprouts. Grinding the root crown deeper and wider cuts down that regrowth, and we'll point out any sprouting to watch for.
Cedar Stumps Left From Clearing

If you've had cedar cleared, you may be looking at dozens of low stumps across a pasture or along a fence line. Ashe juniper doesn't resprout when it's cut below its lowest green branch, so those stumps won't grow back. People grind them for mowing, for trip and tire hazards near the house and paths, and for appearance.
On acreage, we often grind only the stumps in mowed areas, driveways, and walking paths and leave the rest to break down on their own — a practical way to keep the cost down.
Mesquite, Hackberry & Other Resprouters
Mesquite is the stubborn one. It regrows from a bud zone below the soil surface, so a shallow cut lets it come right back. For mesquite we grind below that bud zone wherever the rock allows. Hackberry and cedar elm stumps also sprout readily, and deeper grinding of the root crown is the best way to stop them.
Access on Boerne Lots
Boerne properties range from tight historic yards to hillside homesites with steep, rocky drives. We bring a compact grinder that fits through a standard backyard gate for yard stumps and larger equipment for big stumps on open ground. If a stump is on a slope, near a retaining wall, or close to a septic field, we plan the setup before grinding day so there are no surprises.
Before grinding near buried lines, we request a Texas 811 utility locate. On rural lots it also helps if you point out private lines 811 won't mark, such as irrigation, wiring to outbuildings, or well lines.
Cleanup and What's Left Behind

Grinding turns a stump into a mound of wood chips and soil. You choose what happens next: we can rake the grindings back into the hole as fill, spread them as mulch, or haul them away and backfill with topsoil for planting or sod. That choice is written on your estimate, so there's no question afterward.
